The NIJL promotes exclusive investigative research on Japanese literary resource within and out of Japan. It also collects those materials in an original or photographed form and organizes the acquired informational data. To advance the infrastructure development of Japanese literature and other related study area, the NIJL shares the information with community from both home and abroad in various ways and holds several exhibitions and lectures.
We closely cooperate with about 200 researchers from universities and other institutions across the country, visit places where Japanese literary works and related original text (manuscripts, block-print editions, and etc.) are housed, and conduct research centered on bibliography. Based on our research, we record images of them and also collect originals as needed.
Collected and collated materials are available to read and photocopy at the NIJL Library. Those who are not able to visit the library are also eligible to receive photocopying and other services through the shared system among libraries. Requests for document searches by telephoning and written inquiries are also accepted.
Now, 12 bibliographic databases, four text databases, and three image databases are available to the public.
In cooperation with other institutions (including universities, libraries, archives, museums and art museums), the NIJL release research results to promote Japanese literature and related study areas and to share the achievements with community.
